Our dear friend and longtime #lacausagirl Lolo is the incredible hair and makeup artist behind most of the LACAUSA images you see on our site. We caught up with her at her home in Los Angeles to chat with her about her beauty career, what's inspiring her these days and self care in 2020.
How did you get started in the beauty industry?
I grew up going to a salon that my aunt owned in Los Angeles. It was in the Montebello mall (If you know you know). My cousins all worked there and I just thought they were so cool. I loved looking at the makeup counter and watching my aunt cut hair. She had these extremely long nails and very big 80’s hair I started practicing on my friends and I just knew it was what I wanted to do from an early age. So I went to beauty school in the valley, got a job at a salon and I then realized I was allergic to the chemicals. Luckily I was able to make a shift to hair styling and makeup on set and here I am today.
What inspires your work / what about beauty gets you most excited?
I love skincare! Skincare gets me the most excited. I get to play with so many fun products. I’m loving kosas Tinted Face Oil, Cle Multi Cream and Moonlight Cushion Highlight, Noto's "The Wash", bejbi's Barrier Balm is great for a natural glow and hydration, especially under masks where I’ve been breaking out and getting dry. STEAM shampoo is very cleansing and refreshing, a little Supergoop glow spf and mascara and bam! The glow is gorg. I mean I can talk about products and skincare all day.
What does self care look like to you in 2020?
I think being gentle on myself mentally and being slower and not expecting so much has been it for me. Taking care of the inside reflects out. Oh, and water ;)
What are you focusing your energy on these days?
We are taking over a family property in the desert in Flamingo Heights. We really want to get it fixed up and spend some time out there. Hopefully it will be a place where people want to shoot and stay. It's super exciting to us to take a break from the city for a bit. I lived in the desert and Los Angeles my whole life so I really love them both.
You’ve also been working on some cannabis beauty and body care brands with your husband. Can you tell us a little about what you guys are working on?
My husband has been working in the cannabis industry since 2015 specializing in cannabis topical products. I’ve been able to consult on 2 of the brands and their products and put together a beautiful photoshoot for STEAM. STEAM is a head-to-toe line of cannabis infused beauty products helping to treat issues with your hair, scalp, face and body. Sensa is all about helping people recover and perform better with a line of topicals geared to managing pain and inflammation. I love the gentle smells of both lines, they are not overpowering and really amazing.
